Minutes of Council Meetings: Annual OAA Meeting: 1999

Tuesday, November 5, 1999 10-11:00a, Gerlinger Lounge
Speakers:

Provost and Acting President, John Moseley

Vice President for Administration, Dan Williams

OAA Leadership council chair, Kathie Stanley

Introduction:

Kathie: (summary) Welcome and please enjoy the light refreshments. Today I’d like to briefly review the mission of OAA, thorough all of it’s growing phases (Management Service; UMA), which has provided a link between employees and the UO Administrationspecifically, through the Vice President of Administration.

We have grown from an organization of 200 members to an organization of about 800 members. Our niche and mission remains COMMUNICATION providing a
connection between those who manage (people, resources, etc.) at the University with what is occurring on campus. Recent examples of OAA linking members with the information they need include bulletins on PEBB issues, OPEU contract negotiations, and updates on UO President Frohnmayer’s condition. (more about importance of communication and information sharing )

Parting thought: “If something is important, make time to do it”

Thanks to all for their support and participation in OAA especially Shirien Stevens and John Crosiar. Thanks also to Dan Williams for his support of 20 years, and to my boss (Jim Buch) for allowing me to pursue this passion for service to others.

John: (summary) President Frohnmayer will be back on campus in the very near future. While our systems don’t rely on one individual each individual plays a critical role in the organization. President Frohnmayer brings leadership qualities as President of the UO for which he is highly esteemed. OAA-a broad and diverse group–are in leadership roles within UO departments and agencies.
There have been many changes on campus in the past year: a new law school, a new recreation center, and a new legislative funding model for OUS in which “all revenues we generate, we keep” at UO. The general fund division in a 12 box matrix is based on the educational level of each enrolled, retained student. This model gives us the opportunity to focus on our educational mission. It is a student-centered model. This should encourage OAA members to take on leadership roles throughout campus. At the last UO Accreditation survey the quality of programs, the human scale, collaboration and cooperation and search for excellence were some of the qualities which exemplify the UO campus environment.
Parting thought: “Reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more”, Jonas Salk.
Question to OAAC: Why aren’t Dan, Dave and myself part of OAA? Kathie stated that they are honorary members who will be now listed as such on the OAA roster.

Closing Remarks:

Dan Williams: (summary)
UO has an important mission and your participation in it is important. “What we do and how we do it is important.” Students are learning citizenship skills by watching our leadership.
Fostering a sense of community is visible in what we do on campus such as the events scheduled for Hollowed on campus. The UO is special because of your character and commitment to your work and your organizationsthank you.
